The aim of the study is to evaluate technical and economic feasibility of the Moldova – Romania HVDC interconnection (commissioning of Vulcanesti BtB, as well as construction of Vulcanesti-Chisinau overhead line, expansion of Vulcanesti SS, and upgrade of Chisinau SS). Perspective period between 2020 and 2025 is in main study focus, with analysis being conducted under different scenarios of Moldova and Ukraine synchronization – either with IPS/UPS or with ENTSO-E.
Within the technical and economic project evaluation, transmission network analysis, electricity market analysis, as well as economic analysis is performed. For the needs of electricity market analysis, electricity market model that includes Moldova, Ukraine, Central East Europe and South East Europe was developed, in order to assess the market indicators and potential benefits for Moldova from project commissioning. On the other hand, conducted transmission network analysis was focused on technical assessment of the HVDC Moldova – Romania interconnection: load flow, short circuit, NTCs, variation of losses. For both electricity market analysis and transmission network analysis, professional and commercial software tool packages were used – Antares and PSS/E.
